Beautifying Sahuarita, One Scrap of Litter at a Time
The Town of Sahuarita greatly appreciates the groups, clubs, individuals, organizations, businesses, churches, families, and other entities, also known as “the adopters,” who participate in the town’s Adopt-a-Roadway (AAR) and Adopt-a-Wash (AAW) programs.
The Public Works Department administers these programs. Through each adopter’s volunteer efforts, Sahuarita remains pleasing to the eye for all who travel within our Town. The Town’s AAR program began in the summer of 2002, with two groups, and currently has 25 adopters, making all 26.2 miles of the town’s 25 eligible roadway sections already taken (with a short waiting list).
The Adopt-a-Wash program began April 2009, with one group and currently has five adopters along 1.1 miles of Town eligible washes, leaving two 0.4 mile washes currently available for adoption. Both of Sahuarita’s available washes are located in the Valley Verde Norte subdivision.
Adopters sign a renewable, two-year permit to participate in either program; AAR participants agree to perform clean-ups approximately every three months, while AAW participants agree to perform clean-ups approximately every six months. Roads tend to accumulate litter faster than washes. Sahuarita’s Public Works Department provides the clean-up equipment (trash bags, reflective vests, gloves, and trash pickers) and removes the bags of trash collected and debris stacked on the side of the road after each clean-up. Two signs depicting the adopter’s affiliation are placed along the adopted road or wash, to express the town’s gratitude.
In 2009, 24 roadway adopters provided 365 volunteers to collect 627 bags of trash and several hundred other “odds-and-ends” that were too large to fit into a 30-gallon trash bag. The total hours volunteered for roadways in 2009 was 79.5 hours at 59 separate clean-ups, with over half of these clean-ups performed on a weekend day. In 2009, four wash adopters provided 59 volunteers to collect 68 bags of trash, and many other non-bag-fitting “odds-and-ends.” The total hours volunteered for washes in 2009 was 9.5 hours at six separate clean-ups, with two clean-ups performed on a weekend day.
Below is a list of families and volunteer organizations that keep our streets and washes beautiful. If you would like more information on these programs, contact Public Works Department at 520-344-7100.
